Price: $9.95 – $11.95 per serving

Offering a total of 20 recipes per week, Plated is a New York-based meal kit delivery that focuses on variety and choice. People with a sweet tooth also have an option to add a dessert to their box. The cooking ingredients include 100% antibiotic-free meats, as well as seasonal fruits and vegetables. Whenever possible, Plated relies on sustainably-caught fish and local, organic produce. Unused perishable ingredients are donated to local food banks and organizations, rather than thrown away. Plated has recently been acquired by the national grocery store chain Albertsons and is considering a retail product. Customers have to order their meals at least 6 days in advance.

Meal Plans

Plated features nine possible combinations depending on the number of portions you need each night (2-4) and the number of meals (2-4) you cook per week. The two-servings plan is priced at $11.95 per portion, meaning that the total weekly cost will range from $47.80 to $95.60. The three-servings and four-servings plans are priced at $9.95 per portion. This means, for instance, that three servings on three nights will cost you a total of $89.55 per week or that the highest volume option with four servings on four nights would amount to $159.20. You can further tailor the meal kits to your preferences and choose from recipes for omnivores, seafood-lovers, vegetarians or dessert-seekers. Plated claims to use only antibiotic and hormone-free meat as well as sustainable seafood and non-GMO ingredients.

It is important to note that you have to reach a minimum order value for the shipping fees to be waived. Therefore, the plans that involve cooking on two nights for two or three people do not qualify and would cost you additional $7.95 per week. Plated delivers to over 95% of the US, and you can verify your ZIP code to ensure that they ship to your area. The boxes arrive between 8am and 8pm on the delivery day of your choosing.

Packaging and recipes

The meal kits come filled with individually packed, pre-measured ingredients and recipe cards. The recipes are described as “foolproof” and suit any cooking level, while cooking time ranges from 20 minutes to under an hour. The name of the chef who developed each dish is available on the card and online, so you can search for their other creations if you like their style. The dishes integrate influences ranging from Europe to Asia or Latin America.

The homepage is generally user-friendly, though some information requires more time to obtain. As far as eco-friendliness is concerned, Plated receives points for using recycled cardboard and denim insulation in their packaging. Most other packaging materials can be reused, recycled or disposed of in the regular trash.

Customer service

The Plated customer service team is available through a variety of means, including email, contact form, online chat or phone. The meal kit subscription is flexible: you can swap recipes, skip or unskip weeks, as well as cancel before noon, six days before your next box is scheduled to be delivered.
