Sun Basket is a meal kit provider centered on organic produce, sustainable sourcing and humane treatment of animals. They cooperate with farmers and fisheries across the country and proudly feature videos of their suppliers on their homepage. This San Francisco-based company also caters to people that require special dietary options, such as Paleo or gluten-free and provide a great variety of meals overall. The head chef, Justine Kelly, was the former head chef of the James Beard award-winning The Slanted Door restaurant. Customers need to order their meals at least 4 days in advance.

Meal Plans

Sun Basket offers two customizable menus: Classic or Family. The Classic option delivers three recipes per week at $11.99 per serving. You can choose to receive two or four servings per recipe, bringing the weekly total to $71.94 or $143.88 respectively. The Family menu was developed with a family of four in mind (four servings per recipe). Depending on how often you want to cook, two, three or four recipes per week will be dropped off at your doorstep. Though the 3-recipe options may not be available in all areas, the weekly total for two, three or four meals for a family of four adds up to $79.92, $119.88 or $159.84. Therefore, the price per serving on a Family menu boils down to $9.99.

After selecting a menu, you can also choose from four meal plans: Chef’s Choice, Paleo, Gluten-Free or Vegetarian. The nutritional value of the offered dishes lies between 500 and 800 calories. The Classic menu options also include a meal plan called “Lean & Clean” with around 550 calories per serving.

A shipping fee of $6.99 is charged per order. Sun Basket currently delivers to most states within the continental US. In addition to Alaska and Hawaii, deliveries are not possible to Montana and parts of New Mexico as well. Meal kits ordered through Sun Basket are scheduled to arrive between 8am and 9pm on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, or Thursdays.

Packaging and recipes

Sun Basket’s meal kits come filled with organic, seasonal produce, responsibly raised meat or sustainably sourced seafood. Given these grounding values, it is no wonder that they also rely on eco-friendly packaging that is 100% compostable and recyclable.

Justine Kelly, an award-winning chef, is both the founder and the person responsible for developing the weekly menus. As Sun Basket’s executive chef, Kelly puts together simple dishes that usually demand about 30 minutes to prepare. These recipes are available through their easy-to-use website and integrate Asian, European and Latin-American influences, thus covering a variety of styles and ingredients.

Customer service

As established among other meal kit providers, Sun Basket’s customer service is available per email, through the contact form or by phone. Weeks can be skipped in the members area before the weekly cut-off time on Thursdays. Cancellations are possible at any time and have to be directed to the customer service via a toll-free line.

After using Blue Apron & Hello Fresh, we tried Sun Basket. Especially the quality of the meat & fish are far superior. And I love the Californian recipes. And their green approach I awesome: that takes away some of the guilt of shipping our meals across country.

I had ordered from all meal kit companies as I wanted to check them all out. Sun basket is clearly the best company and way better than the others. Esp. the fact that all food packaging is fully recyclable and compostable stands out.
Also their ingredients are extremely good: all organic and arrives in perfect quality. Hello Fresh is the other organic company I've tried. My wife and I are real foodies at heart and Sun Basket has won our business.

Initially, we ordered Hello Fresh and like it. Hello Fresh portions are perfect for even a family with two teenage boys. Recently, we learnt about Sun Basket and love their paleo option. When we received their delivery, the Sun Basket portions seem to be half of the Hello Fresh ones Got the first delivery today. The portions seem 1/2 the size of Hello Fresh, if even half. Plus Sun Basket is more expensive than Hello Fresh. We have the next few weeks paused while we determine the future of Sun Basket.... It seems silly to cook extra food to supplement Sun Basket when we already paid for the food.

I loooove Sun Basket. Before, we had Blue Apron for a while but Sun Basket requires less prep time and the recipes are super healthy. Blue Apron also repeated their recipes very often whereas Sun Basket has great choice. It is so worth the money. Thank you Sun Basket!
